CBSE Class 9 Artificial Intelligence (Code 417) Guide

By Prakash Panthi, Founder · Published September 27, 2026

If your school offers Artificial Intelligence in Class 9, or your child has chosen it, you may be wondering what it covers and how to help. This guide explains CBSE's AI subject, what students learn, and where to find the official material — plus how a curious child can build the right foundations.

What is CBSE's Artificial Intelligence subject?

CBSE (the Central Board of Secondary Education in India) offers Artificial Intelligence as a skill subject, code 417, for classes 9 and 10. It is an additional skill subject, taught alongside the main subjects, introducing students to what AI is and how it works. CBSE publishes an official Class 9 handbook for it (curated with support from Intel), which you can read on the CBSE Academic AI page or open directly as a PDF handbook (417, Class 9). Facts here were checked against that CBSE material on 28 September 2026; confirm the current year's version on the CBSE site, as documents are updated.

What do students learn?

The subject is an introduction, not a programming course. Class 9 begins with understanding what AI is and reflecting on where it already appears in daily life, then builds towards how machines learn from data and why that raises questions of fairness and responsibility. Like other CBSE skill subjects, it also includes employability skills (communication, self-management, ICT, entrepreneurial and green skills) alongside the AI-specific units. For the exact units and marks, always use the official handbook linked above, as the breakdown can change between years.

How can I help my child?

  • Use the official handbook as the source of truth for what's examined.
  • Connect it to real life. AI is in video recommendations, maps, voice assistants and phone cameras — pointing these out makes the ideas concrete.
  • Encourage the "why it's wrong" habit. A big part of the subject is understanding that AI learns from data and can be biased or mistaken. A child who questions AI rather than trusting it blindly has understood the most important lesson.
  • Keep chatbot use age-appropriate. The subject is about understanding AI, not about using ChatGPT — and chatbot apps have their own age rules (see our guide).

Build the foundations the friendly way

Whether or not a school offers subject 417, the core ideas — how AI learns from examples, how it makes predictions, why it makes mistakes, and how to use it safely — can be understood by any curious 10-to-14-year-old. Our AI for Kids course (ages 10–14) teaches exactly these, in ten short lessons with picture activities, no chatbot account and nothing stored about the child. It's a gentle, honest introduction that pairs well with school AI classes. The first lesson is free.

Students who enjoy the coding side can go further with Python for Kids, and see all our courses by age.
