A ready-to-deploy PHP and MySQL chat. Create rooms in the admin, share the room link, and visitors pick a nickname and start talking. New messages appear within a few seconds using simple polling, so it runs on any shared hosting. Slow mode and rate limits keep rooms usable, and you can remove messages or people at any time.

IMPORTANT: this is deliberately simple. It updates by polling every 3 seconds, not instantly, and is meant for small to medium rooms (dozens of people), not thousands. There are no accounts or passwords (nicknames are not verified identities), no private messages, file or image sharing, typing indicators, message editing, emoji picker, notifications, or profanity filter. Messages stay until you clear them. Because it is public by design, use it only where an open chat is appropriate.

Key Features

Cannot be turned into a script attack

Message text is returned as JSON with every HTML character escaped and is inserted into the page as text, never as HTML. In our tests a message containing an image tag with onerror and a script block was stored and shown exactly as typed and never executed.

Rules that hold up under load

Nicknames are unique per room even when eight people try the same one at the same moment (exactly one wins, no errors). Each person is limited to one message a second and twenty a minute. A nickname is released five minutes after its owner leaves.

Moderation that sticks

A removed message is blanked for everyone. A removed person cannot send or read, and cannot be replaced by someone else grabbing their nickname, until you allow them back.

Simple to host

No websocket server, Node process or paid service. Upload, import the SQL, and it works wherever PHP and MySQL run.

Technical Requirements

PHP 7.4+ (tested on PHP 8.5), MySQL 5.7+ or MariaDB 10+ (tested on MySQL 8.0), and the mysqli extension. Plain PHP, no framework dependency. Every form is CSRF-protected and all database access uses prepared statements.

Nearly: new messages appear within about 3 seconds because the page polls. It is not a websocket chat.

Are messages private?

No. Everyone in a room sees every message, and the admin can see all rooms.

Can I require people to register?

Not in this version; visitors choose a nickname. Accounts would be a customization.

Is the commercial license included?

Is it tested on PHP 8?

Yes — every page was tested end to end on PHP 8.5 with MySQL 8, including bad-input and concurrent-request checks.
