Poll & Voting System — Overview

A ready-to-deploy PHP and MySQL polling system. Create a question with up to ten options and choose how people vote: an open link anyone can use, or single-use codes you hand to specific people. Duplicate votes are blocked, results appear after voting, and the poll can be closed when you are done.

IMPORTANT: open polls are protected by a browser cookie and a per-address limit, which stops casual repeat voting but is not tamper-proof: someone can vote again from another device or by clearing cookies (a voting code is the strong option). It is not suitable for binding legal or statutory elections. There is no voter identity verification, multiple-choice or ranked voting, scheduled opening and closing, or export.

Key Features

Two ways to vote, honestly described

Open mode is for casual polls: one vote per browser, and at most five per network address (adjustable with MAX_VOTES_PER_IP), so a shared office connection still works. Codes mode is for real accountability: each 8-character code can be used exactly once.

Duplicate votes are stopped in the database

A unique key backs the checks, so eight simultaneous clicks from one browser, or eight people sharing one code, produce exactly one vote. Even a first-time visitor who double-clicks is covered.

Privacy by design

Only a hash of the voter's cookie and of their address is stored, so the database cannot be used to see who voted for what.

Results at the right time

On an open poll, results are shown to people after they vote; when you close the poll the final result is public.

Technical Requirements

PHP 7.4+ (tested on PHP 8.5), MySQL 5.7+ or MariaDB 10+ (tested on MySQL 8.0), and the mysqli extension. Plain PHP, no framework dependency. Every form is CSRF-protected and all database access uses prepared statements.

Casually, no. A determined person could by using another device or clearing cookies. Use codes mode when that matters.

Can people pick more than one option?

No, single choice only in this version.

Yes, they update as votes arrive; the admin can see them at any time.
