Why Not to Hand-Roll Login for Every New PHP Project

By Prakash Panthi, Founder · Published September 22, 2026

Every PHP developer has written a login form. It's not conceptually hard: check a username and password, start a session, done. The part that actually takes time isn't the happy path — it's the edge cases that show up once real users touch it. Forgot-password flows. Account enumeration through error messages. Brute-force lockouts. Reset tokens that need to expire and be single-use. None of that is hard individually. All of it adds up to a surprising number of hours on something that isn't the actual product you're being paid to build.

The specific mistake that's easy to make under time pressure

A login form that returns "user not found" for a bad username and "wrong password" for a bad password is leaking information — an attacker can use the different error messages to enumerate which emails are registered, one guess at a time. It's a one-line difference in the code and an easy thing to overlook when the deadline is close and the form technically "works."

Password reset has more failure modes than it looks like

A reset link needs to expire, needs to work exactly once, and needs to not be guessable from a short or predictable token. Getting any one of those wrong turns a convenience feature into a real account-takeover path — and it's exactly the kind of thing that's easy to build "mostly" correctly and ship without fully stress-testing the edge cases.

What the Secure Login & Registration Kit gives you as a starting point

Our Secure Login & Registration Kit is a ready-to-use PHP + MySQL user system: registration with password rules and duplicate-email protection, login with a lockout after 5 failed attempts that doesn't reveal which emails actually exist, and forgot/reset password with single-use links that expire after an hour. User and admin roles are built in, with an admin page to disable, promote or delete users, plus a profile page for users to change their own name and password. Bcrypt hashing and CSRF protection run throughout.

It's an authentication starting point, not a full identity platform — no email verification on sign-up, no two-factor authentication, no social login (Google/Facebook), and no single sign-on. It's meant to be extended: plain PHP and MySQL, no framework lock-in, so a developer can build the actual product on top of it rather than rebuilding this exact layer from scratch on every new client project.

FAQ

Does the login form reveal whether an email is registered?

No — failed login attempts return the same message regardless of whether the email exists, which prevents account enumeration through error messages.

Are password reset links reusable?

No — reset links are single-use and expire after one hour.

Does this include two-factor authentication or social login?

No — it's an authentication starting point covering registration, login, password reset, roles and profile management. 2FA, social login and SSO would be additions on top of it.
