A program is a list of steps

Computers do exactly what the list says, in order — nothing more, nothing less.

The big idea

A computer cannot guess. It does not know what you *meant*. It only does what the list says, one step at a time, in order.

That list is called a program. When you press a button on a game, a program is running — a very long list of tiny steps.

Getting ready to go out is a program too:

  1. Put on socks.
  2. Put on shoes.
  3. Go outside.

If you swap step 1 and step 2, you get shoes with socks on the outside. The computer would do exactly that, because you told it to.

Try it

Put these four cards in the right order. Tap them one at a time.

Tap the cards in the right order to get ready and go out.

Away from the screen

Tell a grown-up how to make a jam sandwich — every single step. If you say "put the jam on", they may put the jar on the table. Be exact!

That was lesson 1. The other 9 are one payment away.
