What you'll build, and how AI helps
A realistic look at building an online store with an AI assistant — what you'll make, what AI is good and bad at, and the tools you need before lesson 2.
What you'll have at the end
By the last lesson you'll have a real, working ecommerce website — not a screenshot, not a template you can't change, but a store you built and understand:
- product pages that read from a database
- a shopping cart
- a checkout that takes real payments through a trusted gateway
- a small admin panel to add and manage products
- the whole thing live on your own domain
You'll build it in PHP and MySQL — the same technology behind a huge share of the web, and the one this site's products use. And you'll build it with an AI assistant (ChatGPT, Claude, or similar) writing and explaining code alongside you.
What AI is genuinely good at here
Used well, an AI assistant is like a patient senior developer sitting next to you. It's very good at:
- Writing boilerplate — the repetitive code for forms, database queries and pages.
- Explaining code — paste anything and ask "what does this do, line by line?"
- Fixing errors — paste the error message and the code, and it usually spots the cause.
- Suggesting the next step — "I have product pages; what do I need for a cart?"
What AI is *not* good at (be honest about this)
This matters more than the hype admits:
- It's confidently wrong sometimes. It will invent function names or write code that looks right and isn't. You must test everything.
- It doesn't know your exact setup unless you tell it — your file names, your database, your hosting.
- It can write insecure code if you don't ask for security. Lesson 10 is entirely about checking this.
- It won't make the decisions for you. *You* decide what you sell, how it works, and what "done" means.
The skill this course teaches is not "typing prompts." It's knowing what to ask for, and how to check what you get back. That's what keeps you in control.
The golden rule
> Never paste code into your store that you can't at least roughly explain to yourself.
If the AI gives you something you don't understand, your next prompt is always: "Explain this to me simply, and tell me what could go wrong with it." Understanding beats speed every time — especially once real money is involved.
What you need before lesson 2
- A computer with a web browser.
- A free AI assistant account — ChatGPT (chat.openai.com) or Claude (claude.ai) both have free tiers that are plenty for this course.
- Willingness to go one step at a time and test as you go.
You do *not* need to buy hosting yet — you'll set up a free local environment first, and we only go live near the end. You also don't need to be a coder; a little HTML helps but isn't required.
Try it
Open your AI assistant and warm up with this prompt:
I'm about to build a small ecommerce website in PHP and MySQL, one step
at a time, with your help. I'm a beginner. Before we start, explain in
plain language what PHP does, what MySQL does, and how they work together
on a web page. Keep it short.
Read the answer. If any word is unclear, ask it to explain that word. Getting comfortable asking follow-up questions is the single most useful habit for the rest of this course.
That was lesson 1. The other 11 are one payment away.
